Claude Code 2.1.235

An optional `spellcheck` setting underlines misspelled words in the prompt input as you type, using your installed aspell, hunspell or ispell. The rest is refinement: memory and CPU usage improve while cloud sessions such as /ultrareview or /autofix-pr run in the background, permission dialogs now always match what a grant would cover, and the embedded grep in native macOS/Linux builds fails fast on pathological patterns instead of exhausting memory. Fixes land across nested markdown list alignment, shifted prompt input highlights, Shift+Tab in the permission prompt's comment field, and notebook cell approval dialogs.

What changed

Claude Code 2.1.235 shipped on August 18, 2026. One new setting lands — spellchecking in the prompt input — and everything else corrects behavior that was already there. The focus is resource usage while cloud sessions run in the background, permission dialogs describing exactly what a grant covers, and markdown and input highlights landing where they should in the terminal.

New features

  • spellcheck setting

A typo in the prompt went out as typed, with nothing in the input to flag it. The new optional spellcheck setting underlines misspelled words in the prompt input as you type, using your installed aspell, hunspell or ispell. It applies only when turned on.

Key improvements

  • Lower memory and CPU while cloud sessions run in the background

Cloud sessions such as /ultrareview or /autofix-pr had their event streams re-scanned and re-rendered on every update while running in the background. That work is gone, and memory and CPU usage drop with it.

  • Permission dialogs match what a grant would cover

A dialog’s display text and its “don’t ask again” option could describe something other than the grant it would actually create. Both now always match what a grant would cover, and “don’t ask again” is withheld when the contents cannot be fully displayed.

  • Embedded grep in native builds

The grep embedded in native macOS and Linux builds could keep working on a pathological pattern until it exhausted memory. Such patterns now fail fast. -m N combined with -A/-C also prints the correct context.

  • Clearer context-limit error

The context-limit error said nothing about auto-compact, so there was no way to tell it had been turned off. It now says when auto-compact is off and points to /config to re-enable it.

  • Vim mode keeps NORMAL mode and cursor position

Toggling the detailed transcript (ctrl+o) or closing a panel dropped Vim mode’s NORMAL state and cursor position. Both are now preserved.

  • Arrow keys and Enter in quick succession

Pressing Enter immediately after an arrow key could run the previously highlighted option instead of the one you had just moved to. Dialogs now select the option you navigated to.

  • SendMessage refuses oversized messages up front

Messages too large for cross-session delivery were silently dropped. SendMessage now refuses them up front instead.

  • claude rc applies the enterprise-gateway check

Starting Remote Control with claude rc skipped the enterprise-gateway availability check that interactive startup performs. Both paths now apply the same check.

Bug fixes

Rendering & input

  • Nested markdown list items misaligning at depth 3+ — fixed; wrapped list items also get a hanging indent in the terminal UI.
  • Prompt input highlights (slash commands, keywords, mentions) appearing shifted by one or more characters — fixed; this showed up in some multi-line prompts.
  • Slash commands run while Claude is responding showing HTML entities instead of the actual characters — fixed.
  • The prompt footer not showing the “Update installed” restart notice after a background auto-update — fixed.
  • The expanded task list (ctrl+t) always starting collapsed when resuming or relaunching into a session that still has open tasks — fixed.

Permissions & approval dialogs

  • Shift+Tab inside the permission prompt’s comment field approving the edit and granting session-wide edit permission instead of closing the field — fixed.
  • Notebook cell delete/replace approval dialogs silently omitting the existing cell content when the notebook or cell could not be read — fixed; the dialog now says why.

Other fixes

  • Whole-prompt-cache invalidation when a language server disconnected or reconnected mid-session — fixed.
  • The Agent tool advertising a general-purpose default in sessions where that agent is unavailable — fixed; an omitted subagent_type there now gets a clear error listing the available agents.
  • [VSCode] Focus jumping between open Claude tabs on its own when a window with several Claude panels is restored or reloaded — fixed.

Notes

  • spellcheck is opt-in — turn the setting on, and keep in mind it relies on an installed aspell, hunspell or ispell.
  • Shift+Tab behaves differently in the permission prompt — inside the comment field it now closes the field rather than approving the edit and granting session-wide edit permission.
  • “don’t ask again” may not be offered — it is withheld whenever the contents cannot be fully displayed.
  • The grep improvements apply to native builds — they cover the grep embedded in native macOS and Linux builds.
  • The context-limit error now reports auto-compact state — if it says auto-compact is off, re-enable it from /config.
